Title: JUNO: A Multipurpose Observatory for Terrestrial and Cosmic Neutrinos
Date: Miércoles 9 de abril, 14:30 hrs (Chile Continental)
Location: Online
Abstract: Neutrinos are elusive particles with unique properties that offer key insights into the fundamental makeup of our world and the cosmic sources that produce them. The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is a multipurpose neutrino detector in China that is nearing completion after over a decade of design and construction. In addition to having an unprecedentedly large 20 kton liquid scintillator target, JUNO will have an energy resolution of 3%, with which it will be able to resolve the fine structure in the oscillation probability of reactor antineutrinos at a baseline of 52.5 km. This capability will enable JUNO to determine how neutrino masses are ordered and to advance our knowledge of neutrino oscillations beyond current limits. JUNO will also have a rich program with neutrinos from a variety of natural sources, such as the Earth, the Sun, the atmosphere, and supernova explosions. This talk will cover the design, physics prospects, and current status of the project.
