Abstract:
The Large Hadron Collider is best known for colliding protons and heavy ions together, but it also provides a unique opportunity to study collisions of light. In ultra-peripheral heavy-ion collisions, the strong electromagnetic fields of the ions act as intense photon beams. These enable the study of photon-photon and photon-ion interactions. The seminar will present results from ATLAS experiment, highlighting how such measurements open new windows on testing quantum electrodynamics, studying nuclear structure, and the search for physics beyond the Standard Model.
