Title:   Hierarchies from (residual) modular symmetries and modulus stabilisation

Abstract:

Modular invariance is a predictive generalisation of the traditional flavour symmetry approach to the puzzle of fermion masses and mixing. Inthe first part of this talk, I will report on a mechanism to generate hierarchical fermion mass matrices in modular-invariant models offlavour, based on the proximity of the value of the modulus to a point of residual symmetry (no flavons are required). In the second part of the talk, I will discuss the problem of modulus stabilisation. By analysing simple UV-motivated CP-invariant potentials for the modulus, a class of potentials is found which has non-fine-tuned CP-breaking minima in the vicinity of the cusp (point of Z3 residual symmetry). These novel mínima are compatible with the requirements of the above mechanism.
