SEMINARIO GRUPO FÍSICA DE ALTAS ENERGÍAS

“Skipper CCD and the DM2 experiment in the search for Dark Matter”

Expondrá: Nicolás Avalos, Tesista de Magister, Instituto Balseiro, Bariloche, Argentina.

Scientific Charge-Coupled-Devices (CCDs) have been extensively used in ground and space-based astronomy and X-ray imaging. They are also currently being used in dark matter (DM) direct detection experiments. A new type of CCD, called Skipper-CCD, enhances the resolution at low energy interactions and therefore provides an excellent sensitivity to low-mass dark matter particles and coherent neutrino-nucleus scattering.
In the first part of my talk I will describe the operation of these detectors. In the second part I will show how we are using a Skipper CCD to search for a DM signal in the DM2 experiment. Located at 41o S in Bariloche, Argentina, this experiment provides a unique location to probe the low mass portion (<1 GeV) of WIMP parameter space seeking for a diurnal modulation of dark matter events.
